Equinix has become the first data center provider in Europe to achieve both ISO 50001 and ISO 14001 certification, for its UK and Netherlands data centers.
ISO 50001:2011 is designed to give organizations a recognized framework for integrating energy performance into management practices while 14001 looks at the elements of effective environmental management systems used to achieve environmental goals.
Equinix said to achieve the standards it had to put in place systematic energy and environmental management processes for the continual improvement of its environmental performance.
Lloyd’s Register Quality Assurance account manager Ken Roberts said the standards are some of the most difficult to attain in the industry in regards to environmental and energy management.
“Facilities like data centers usually require a lot of energy to run and so it is really beneficial for the sector to see companies like Equinix working hard to ensure they are playing a part in improving energy efficiency,” Roberts said.
Equinix Chief Marketing Officer Dick Theunissen said data center operators should understand to the impact they can have on the health and environment in which they operate in.
“It’s also important to our customers that their data center provider is implementing best practices to reduce the environmental footprint and to meet stringent European regulations in this area.”
