Electrical-systems vendor PowerSecure has launched a back-up generator for data centers and hospitals that uses a combination of natural-gas and diesel fuel.

The technology, known as “bi-fuel”, is considered cost-efficient and has a smaller negative impact on the environment than all-diesel generators.

Launch of the PowerBlock bi-fuel generator is part of PowerSecure’s change in strategy to focus more on the data center and hospital verticals. As another step in the new direction, PowerSecure hired two industry executives to lead its foray into each of the two markets.

The company’s CEO Sidney Hinton said, “Our new PowerBlock is designed with industry-leading bi-fuel capabilities to capitalize on the low cost of natural gas, in a factory certified Tier 4 Interim compliant package.”

The Tier 4 Interim requirement is a US Environmental Protection Agency emission standard for diesel engines.

Hinton added that the two new hires were both trusted industry professionals with long successful track records in their respective fields. “We are excited with the focus and expertise they will bring to customers in these large and growing markets.”

The PowerBlock generator system can use fuel that is up to 70% natural gas, which, according to PowerSecure, provides fuel cost savings and high power density.
